Where this strategy is England-only
Historic England grants cover England only. Outside England funding and consent are handled by the national heritage body and the local authority.
Council pages for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland explain the alternative route for each nation.
What to verify
- Confirm what is protected: listing, conservation area, scheduled monument or none.
- Check which grants are open from the national heritage body and what they cover.
- Commission a conservation-accredited surveyor.
- Check VAT and consent requirements for each work package.
- Start pre-application conversation with the conservation officer.
Building safety triggers
In England, higher-risk building rules generally apply to buildings of at least 18 metres or 7 storeys that contain at least two homes (and to some care homes and hospitals). Which gateway steps apply depends on the building's height, storeys and use and on the proposed work. It is not set by the council.
